London's Seven Best Christmas Tree Displays

Covent Garden

Covent Garden is a magical place to visit at Christmastime. Every year, this shopping hub is transformed into a winter wonderland, complete with a charming Christmas tree, twinkling lights, and other special decorations. In 2022, you can enjoy Covent Garden’s tree display from the 8th of November until January.  

The open-air piazza also hosts several festive events, such as daily snow showers and its Winter Warmer Festival (from the 8th to the 20th of November). Whether you’re visiting with friends or as a family, Covent Garden is the perfect place to get into the Christmas spirit.  

Somerset House  

Nearest tube stations: Temple, Covent Garden, Charing Cross, Embankment   

Located in central London, Somerset House features one of London’s best Christmas trees every year. Its magnificent 40-foot tree stands in the centre of the courtyard adorned with dazzling decorations, which this year will be provided by Moët & Chandon. It also boasts a huge ice rink come wintertime, where visitors can soak in the festive atmosphere with a few hours of skating.  

The Skate at Somerset House event will run from the 16th of November 2022 to the 15th of January 2023. Book your ticket and witness the house’s incredible tree for yourself.  

Trafalgar Square  

Nearest tube stations: Charing Cross, Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus  

Home to the most famous Christmas tree in London (and the world), Trafalgar Square is a must-visit spot this winter. Every year since 1947, Norway has gifted London with a Norwegian spruce to show gratitude for Britain’s support during World War II. Usually over 20 metres tall, this tree is carefully selected from the forests around Oslo and decorated with vertical string lights. A lighting ceremony takes place at the beginning of December, and the tree is displayed until January.  

Coal Drops Yard  

Nearest tube station: King’s Cross St. Pancras  

The Christmas tree display at Coal Drops Yard is always amazing, and this year is set to be no different. Standing at 28-feet tall, the 2021 tree was designed in a prism shape, featuring angled lights and mirrors for a unique look.

Leadenhall Market  

Nearest tube station: Monument  

Dating back to 1321, Leadenhall Market is one of the capital’s most spectacular Victorian markets. Each year, this selection of boutique shops and restaurants becomes a festive haven, complete with glistening lights and a signature Victorian Christmas tree. Pop by to enjoy a spot of shopping and explore the stunning covered pathways where part of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was filmed.

St. Pancras International  

Nearest tube station: King’s Cross St. Pancras  

Heading to London by train this winter? If you alight at St. Pancras International, take a moment to marvel at the station’s Christmas tree. Located on the main concourse, the tree here is always bold and impactful, delighting all those who stroll past it. Previous designs have included a storybook-themed installation and a 47-foot floral creation, and the grand unveiling usually takes place during November.  

St. Pancras International is also a great place to grab those last-minute gifts, home to a range of high-end and high-street retailers. 

The Shard  

Nearest tube station: London Bridge  

This year, see the highest Christmas tree in London at one of the city’s most iconic landmarks – The Shard. The View from The Shard’s gigantic Nordic Yuletide tree is a sight to behold, situated on one of the building’s highest floors.   

Alternatively, book a dinner reservation at Aqua Shard to witness an equally superb tree. Located on the 31st floor, Aqua Shard boasts a show-stopping tree every year for guests to enjoy. In 2021, its design consisted of 800 sparkling paintbrushes to represent the bright and merry festive season. 

It has become tradition for the team at Aqua Shard to create an accompanying cocktail and dessert for diners to indulge in while they admire the tree. If you want to enjoy a delicious meal while overlooking the city below, head to The Shard this winter.
